I have said it before and I will say it again, and again, I am 100% obsessed with roasted garlic. Mastering how to roast garlic was one of the best things I have ever learnt how to do. This is an extremely versatile ingredient that can literally be added to almost any dish, giving it some extra health benefits, and loading it up with tons of extra flavor.
The taste of roasted garlic is well, garlicky, but at the same time it is sweet and soft. Raw garlic normally has an overpowering, pungent taste. But roasted garlic is toned down into a slightly sweet (almost caramely) tang, with mild garlic tones. It is absolutely divine and one of the many reasons I am obsessed with roasted garlic!
There are many proven health benefits that come along with the common clove of garlic. It improves overall health and includes properties that help lower blood pressure, reduce bad cholesterol, and even help battle a common cold!
Just another plus of this amazing ingredient!
Just a few ideas of what you can add roasted garlic to!
- Add into Mashed Potatoes.
- Spread roasted garlic on a slice of toasted bread with some butter, and serve as garlic bread.
- Add whole cloves of roasted garlic into a spaghetti or alfredo sauce to put over pasta.

How to prepare
Roasted garlic is one of the easiest things to prepare ever. Traditionally garlic is roasted by keeping the skin and cloves intact. That method is ok, but I much prefer this method.
In this method the skin and cloves are removed and peeled. By removing the skin and coating the cloves with olive oil, salt and pepper, the cloves get almost a caramel like coating on the edges, giving the garlic a much sweeter taste.
Then when the garlic is mashed up, all of the yummy salt and pepper is still coating the garlic and practically baked right in.
Bottom line is learning how to roast garlic should be at the top of any cooks to do list!
Step by Step Directions
Peel a whole head of garlic, and place on a small piece of aluminum foil.
Coat the garlic cloves with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, salt and pepper.
Gather the 4 corners of the aluminum foil and gather into a ball. Pinch the foil at the top to seal completely. Bake for 30 minutes.
After the garlic is done baking, let it cool completely before opening the roasting packet.
Open the package to reveal the roasted garlic cloves. Now you can either use the cloves whole or you can mash them up!

How to Roast Garlic
- 1 whole head Garlic
- 1 teaspoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Salt and Pepper, to taste
- Preheat oven to 350°F
- Peel cloves of garlic, and place in a piece of aluminum foil (approx. 8”x8” piece of foil)
- Pour the extra virgin olive oil on the garlic cloves and season generously with salt and pepper.
- Gather corners of foil and bunch together creating a little package.
- Place package in an oven safe dish and bake for 25-30 minutes.
- Remove dish from oven and let cool completely.
- Mash or use the roasted garlic cloves whole!
