What is Bang Bang Sauce
It is a deliciously creamy, spicy, and slightly sweet sauce known for its yummy bold flavors and versatility. The combination of ingredients gives the sauce a rich and tangy flavor with a slight kick of spice and a hint of sweetness.
Bang bang sauce is popular at many chain restaurants, often served with dishes like Montana's Kapow Shrimp and Bonefish Grill's Bang Bang Shrimp.
This recipe is a copycat version of those restaurant's sauces, so you can easily recreate a homemade version of this delicious sauce right in your own kitchen!

Recipe Ingredients

- Thai Sweet Chili Sauce - is an extremely flavourful pre-prepared sauce that you can find at almost any grocery store. Thai sweet chili sauce has a sweet taste with a spicy bite and while it is not the spiciest sauce out there, it does pack a punch.
- Mayonnaise - any type or kind of mayonnaise can be used to make this sauce. Using light mayonnaise is completely a personal preference, please note that the nutritional value/facts reflect the use of light mayonnaise.
- Brown Sugar - the brown sugar in this recipe can be substituted for maple syrup or regular white sugar.
A full ingredient list with the exact quantities can be found in the recipe card below.
Recipe Modifications
- Vegan - to make this sauce vegan, use vegan mayonnaise. Most store-bought sweet chili sauces are vegan, just double check it doesn't contain fish or oyster sauce.
- Spicy - this sauce already has a tiny bit of spice, if you prefer it spicier add a little more sriracha or some chili paste.
- Kid-friendly - reduce the amount of sriracha to ½ tablespoon or less making it significantly less spicy and more sweet.

How to Make the Sauce
It could not be easier to make. This is a "put all the ingredients into a bowl and stir it together" kind of recipe.

Step 1
To make the sauce, in a small bowl add the mayonnaise, thai sweet chili sauce, sriracha, brown sugar, scallions, and sesame oil.

Step 2
Using a small whisk or a spoon, whisk or stir to fully combine all of the ingredients.
Cover the sauce and refrigerate for 15 minutes before serving.
What to Serve the Sauce With
Anything, literally anything.
Some of my favourite ways to serve this sauce include smothering it on crunchy bang bang shrimp, chicken wings, or, for our vegan friends, a big batch of baked tofu or crispy cauliflower wings.
It can also be served as a dipping sauce or even a spread on your favourite burgers!
Expert Tips
Hint: let the sauce rest in the fridge for a minimum of 15 minutes before serving to let the flavors all come together. And while this sauce keeps well in the fridge, it still tastes best served fresh, the same day it is made.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not really, no. It does have a bit of a spice kick to it, but the sweetness of the sweet chili sauce and brown sugar mellows out the spiciness.
To make the sauce more spicy add more sriracha or add some chili paste. To make the sauce less spicy, reduce the amount of sriracha to ½ tablespoon or less.
Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Stir before serving.
Bang bang sauce is delicious on a variety of dishes, most specifically seafood dishes. Try this sauce on these delicious bang bang shrimp, fresh shrimp tacos, or even as the topping for this pan-seared salmon dish!
