This might just be the easiest recipe I've ever shared on this blog. This buffalo wing sauce is smooth, creamy, and downright addictive. The best part? You only need two ingredients and less than 5 minutes of time to make it!

Buffalo sauce is an incredibly versatile sauce. It is perfect when served with these crispy baked chicken wings, air fryer cauliflower wings, or even this crispy tofu! It can also be mixed with honey garlic sauce or simple teriyaki sauce to make spicy versions of those sweeter sauces!
Why This Two-Ingredient Buffalo Wing Sauce Works
- It takes literally 5 minutes to make, and the hardest part of the recipe is measuring out the ingredients!
- The butter emulsifies the hot sauce into a smooth sauce, and the butter also balances the heat of the hot sauce wonderfully.
- It tastes like restaurant-style buffalo wing sauce, and it pairs perfectly with crispy homemade chicken wings!
What is buffalo sauce made of?
Even though buffalo sauce only has two ingredients, buffalo sauce and hot sauce are not the same thing. Buffalo sauce has a creamy, smooth consistency, whereas hot sauce has more of a spicy kick and vinegary flavour.
Ingredients You'll Need

- Hot Sauce - (your favourite kind, I prefer to use Frank's Red Hot for this recipe)
- Salted Butter - Salted or unsalted butter works for this recipe. I prefer using salted because I think it adds a better flavor.
See the recipe card below for quantities.
Buffalo Sauce Variations
As I mentioned above, buffalo sauce can be mixed with other sauces to create spicy deliciousness! This is all done by preference. I like to do a 1:1 ratio of sauces that I mix with buffalo sauce, but you can add as little or as much as you want!
Some ideas of other sauces that you can mix buffalo sauce with are:
- Honey Garlic Sauce - mix buffalo wing sauce with honey garlic sauce to make a hot honey sauce. The hot honey sauce is perfect when used on my honey hot chicken salad, it is seriously the best!
- Easy Teriyaki Sauce - mix buffalo wing sauce with this easy teriyaki sauce to make a hotty-yaki sauce.
- Ranch or Caesar Dressing - yes, it's salad dressing, but mix about ¼ cup of buffalo sauce and 1 cup of dressing for a spectacular treat! Use spicy ranch or spicy caesar dressing as a dip for wings, fries, or pizza!

How to make buffalo wing sauce
When I say this is an easy recipe, this is as easy as a recipe gets! Buffalo wing sauce takes about 2 minutes to make, seriously, the hardest part is measuring the ingredients...

Step 1
In a small saucepan, combine your favourite hot sauce (I like to use Frank's Red Hot) and butter.
Place the saucepan over medium heat and, stirring consistently, melt the butter and stir together the sauce.

Step 2
Serve! Serve this hot sauce with baked chicken wings, air fryer cauliflower wings, or anything you like, the options are endless!
How To Store Leftover Buffalo Sauce
Store leftover buffalo sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
The buffalo sauce will solidify in the fridge because of the butter in it. To use it, gently heat the desired amount in the microwave for 15-30 seconds or in a saucepan on the stove.

Buffalo Wing Sauce FAQ's
Buffalo wing sauce has a noticeable heat, but the butter helps balance the finished sauce out. To describe it, I would say it has more of a rich, creamy, slightly sweet, spicy taste.
It is so good because you are literally mixing hot sauce with butter. And butter is the best. 😉
Homemade buffalo wing sauce goes well on so many things! Use it as a dipping sauce for antojitos, drizzle it on any kind of pizza or toss some crispy oven-baked cauliflower in it for the best side dish!
I recommend using real butter for a classic buffalo wing sauce because it provides a better flavor and emulsifies more smoothly. Margarine can work in a pinch, but it could result in a thinner sauce and a slightly different taste.
No. Hot sauce is just one ingredient, while buffalo sauce is made by combining hot sauce with butter. The butter mellows the heat and creates a rich, smooth sauce.
Separation is normal. Buffalo sauce is an emulsion, and the butter can separate as it cools. If separation happens, simply whisk or stir the sauce before using, or gently reheat it to bring it back together.
A cayenne pepper-based hot sauce is best, such as Frank's Red Hot. Frank's is the most traditional choice.
Yes! Buffalo sauce is great for making ahead, and it stores very well. Store it in the fridge and reheat it gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, stirring it until it is smooth.
