Camembert vs. Brie Cheese
Brie and Camembert cheese are very similar cheeses. They are both soft cheeses that bake perfectly into creamy, indulgent savory treats. Camembert cheese has a more earthy, intense flavor, whereas brie is creamier and milder in taste.
Personally, I love Camembert cheese and have been eating it since I was little. The first way I was introduced to Camembert was when my great aunt cooked it with sun-dried tomatoes and roasted garlic, the same way that I do in this roasted garlic baked brie recipe.

Camembert Roti Ingredients

- Camembert Cheese - Camembert cheese is the traditional soft cheese for this recipe, but brie is very similar and can be substituted.
- Honey - Liquid or raw honey can be used for this recipe. If you are using raw honey, spread it around with a butter knife or melt it before adding it to the top of the cheese.
- Thyme - Fresh thyme is preferred, but dried thyme can be substituted.

Best Toppings For Baked Camembert
The base recipe for Camembert roti is Camembert cheese, honey and fresh thyme. For all of these variations, keep the base recipe the same and add these extra toppings on top.
- Hot Honey - instead of plain honey, use hot honey for added spice and kick!
- Roasted Garlic & Chive - add some smashed roasted garlic cloves and freshly minced chives.
- Fig & Lemon - add chopped dried figs + the zest of one lemon for a rich, fresh taste.
- Brown Sugar & Candied Pecans - add a small handful of candied pecans (follow the instructions in this recipe to make candied pecans) and sprinkle 1 Tablespoon of brown sugar over the top of the camembert cheese before baking.
- Make It Spicy - add 1-2 Tablespoons of a hot calabrese spread, I love the Gigi Kaboom Calabrese Spread (not sponsored).
- Dried Cranberries - add some chopped dried cranberries for a tart, sweet version.
- Strawberry & Walnut - add a couple of tablespoons of macerated strawberries and crushed walnuts. Inspired by my puff pastry baked brie with strawberries and walnuts!
- Truffle Oil - add a light drizzle of truffle oil on top to enhance the flavor profile. Do not add too much, as Camembert cheese is already quite oily.
What To Serve With This Baked Camembert Cheese Recipe
Serve Camembert roti as an hors d'oeuvre or appetizer before a holiday meal or gathering. Pair it with water crackers, multigrain fig crackers, or a thinly sliced crusty baguette garlic bread for dipping.
It can also be included on a charcuterie board and served with fresh fruit, like grapes, pears and apples, as well as with roasted almonds, candied cashews and deli meats like Genoa salami.

How To Make Camembert Roti

Step 1
Score the top of the Camembert cheese in a crosshatch pattern, cutting about ¾ of the way through the cheese. Do not cut all the way through.

Step 2
Place the scored cheese wheel into a brie baker, crosshatch side up, and top with honey and fresh thyme.

Step 3
Bake uncovered in a 350°F oven for 15-20 minutes until the cheese is fully melted.

Step 4
Serve Camembert roti warm with a side of crackers, fresh fruit and nuts.
Recipe Tips
- If you don't have a brie baker, use a small casserole dish, oven-safe dish or small cast iron pan to bake the Camembert in. You want the cheese to fit as snugly as possible in the dish you are baking it in so it doesn't run all over the baking dish as it melts.
- Do not overbake the cheese. Overbaking the cheese can lead to a rubbery texture.
How To Store Leftover Camembert
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, bake or microwave until cheese is just melted. Do not overheat, as it can make the cheese rubbery.
Frequently Asked Questions
No, you do not need to remove the rind on the Camembert before baking. If you would like, you can shave it off a bit, but still leave enough that the structure of the cheese is there.
Yes! Brie is a milder, creamier soft cheese and can be used for this recipe if you would like!
In a 350°F oven, it takes 15-20 minutes for the Camembert to fully melt.
Camembert cheese was first developed in the Normandy region of France in the late 1700s by a farmer and a priest that was fleeing the French Revolution. By the 19th century, Camembert had become a well-known cheese and was made in small batches on local Norman farms. In the early 20th century, recipes started emerging in Norman cookbooks, and the dish "Camembery Roti" as we know it today became popular in the late 20th century in French bistros, British gastropubs and even as ski resort cuisine.
So in summary, Camembert roti is not a centuries-old French recipe, but rather a modern evolution of a traditional historic cheese.
