Cooking Method Variations
This is a recipe for oven-baked sweet and sour sausages, but here are some other cooking options, too!
- Slow Cooker - To make sweet and sour sausages in the slow cooker, brown the sausages in a frying pan. Transfer them to the slow cooker and add all remaining ingredients, stirring to combine. Cook on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 2-2½ hours.
- Instant Pot - To make these sweet and sour sausages in the Instant Pot, brown the sausages using saute mode until they are fully cooked. Add all of the remaining ingredients, stirring to combine. Change the Instant Pot to high-pressure mode and set the lid to sealing. Cook for 15 minutes, with 10 minutes of natural release.
- Stovetop - To make sweet and sour sausages on the stovetop, in a large saute pan, add the sausages and fully cook them. Stir the ingredients for the sauce together in a bowl, add a slurry of 2 teaspoons of cornstarch mixed with 2 Tablespoons of water to the sauce and add it to the sausages, stirring to combine. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and cook for 15-20 minutes until the sauce has thickened and the sausages are fully cooked.

How To Make Sweet and Sour Sausages

Step 1
In a large oven-safe casserole pan (this is the cast iron casserole pan that I use), brown the breakfast sausages and preheat the oven to 375°F.

Step 2
While the sausages are browning, add the tomato sauce, ketchup, maple syrup, vinegar, chili powder, curry powder, garlic powder, onion powder, onion flakes and allspice to a mixing bowl. Whisk to fully combine and then stir in the peaches.

Step 3
When the sausages have browned, pour the prepared sweet and sour sauce over top. Stirring to fully coat the sausages with the sauce.

Step 4
Bake for 45 minutes, stirring once, halfway through the baking time.

Step 5
Serve sweet and sour sausages on top of tender brown rice, with roasted broccoli or with a side of pan-fried sweet potatoes.
Tips For Best Results
- Using maple syrup prevents the sauce from being too sweet and also makes it a little healthier.
- If you want a thicker sweet and sour sauce, make a slurry of 2 teaspoons of cornstarch mixed with 2 Tablespoons of water and add it to the sauce.
- Breakfast sausages are the best sausages to use for this recipe. Pork, beef or turkey are all good options. We use pork breakfast sausages.
- If you do not have a stovetop-to-oven-safe pan, brown the sausages in a regular frying pan and transfer them to a 9x13 casserole dish before adding the sauce.
How To Store Leftovers
Store leftover sweet and sour sausages in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Prepared sweet and sour sausages can be frozen for up to 2 months.
