“This is hands down the most addicting snack you’ll ever make”
You may have heard these called Muddy Buddies, Chex mix, or Puppy Chow. Call it whatever you want but one thing will always be true, they are FREAKING DELICIOUS.
If you like this recipe then you have to make my sweet and spicy chex mix, too!

This amazing snack is made out of three main ingredients: chex cereal, chocolate, and peanut butter. The chocolate and peanut butter are melted together and that is then used to coat the chex cereal. After that, it is all tossed in powdered sugar to individually lock in the chocolaty peanut butter flavour in a crisp little morsel.
This snack is loved by everyone and it is definitely the most addicting snack you will ever make.
If you want a truly delicious snack, I HIGHLY recommend adding a handful of these to the top of a bowl of ice cream! 😉

Ingredient Notes
- Chex Cereal - Whichever flavour of chex cereal can be used for this recipe. I prefer to use either the honey or cinnamon flavour! As an added bonus, chex cereal is gluten free! So as long as you make sure to use the gluten free options for the rest of the ingredients this is a gluten free snack!
- Chocolate Chips - Any type of chocolate will do for this recipe. Semi Sweet, Dark, White, Milk, even Butterscotch chips would work! I prefer using Hershey's 50% dark chocolate chips for this recipe.
- Peanut Butter - Any type of peanut butter will work for this recipe, even natural peanut butter! I prefer to use the classic smooth peanut butter.
- Add-in’s - Use your imagination and add whatever you want to your mix! Some ideas include roasted almonds, nuts, chopped up candy bars, or dried fruit. As an alternative, you don’t have to add any add in’s and it will still be delicious.
How to make this incredible snack
In a small saucepan add the chocolate chips and peanut butter.

Place it over medium heat and stir constantly until fully melted, but not boiling.
In other words, as soon as the chocolate and peanut butter has melted together, remove it from the heat.
Stir in the almond extract and kosher salt, then set aside.
Next, in a large mixing bowl add the chex cereal. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the top of the chex cereal and using a sturdy spoon, fold the chex until it is fully coated with the chocolate mixture.

Once the cereal is fully coated, place it in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to let it briefly cool and set.
After the cereal has had a chance to set, remove it from the refrigerator.

Important Note- Only allow the cereal to set for 15 minutes the first time. If it is left longer it could fully set and harden, which would create a giant lump of chocolate coated cereal. (I mean, it wouldn't be the worst thing 😂, but it’s not what were going for)
After the cereal has briefly set, remove it from the refrigerator.
Add one cup of powdered sugar at a time, tossing the cereal with a spoon. Keep slowly adding powdered sugar until the chex cereal has separated into little clumps and it is not sticking together any more.

Add in your preferred add in’s, stirring to incorporate.
Place the cereal back in the refrigerator for a minimum of 1 hour before serving to allow the chocolate to fully harden and set.

How to Store
Store leftover muddy buddies in an airtight container or zip top bag. They can either be kept at room temperature or in the refrigerator. In the hotter months I would recommend keeping them in the refrigerator as they will melt if they get too warm.
Muddy Buddies stored properly in the refrigerator will stay fresh for up to one week!
